ORCHARD
The course provides hands-on experience for seven sessions beginning Saturday, March 5, and continuing every other week, weather permitting. Sessions will be held from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm. Since most of the activity will be outdoors, appropriate clothing and footwear is essential for comfort and enhances both learning and enjoyment.
Topics covered include: soil characteristics, fertility and biology, selecting varieties, seeding flats and direct seeding, transplanting (including trees and shrubs and vines), soil preparation, animals/ insects/ diseases: their management and control, weeds and weeding, irrigation systems, construction, and water management, crop rotation planting for success, hand and powered garden tools, strategies for coping with unfavorable weather, harvesting and post harvest handling, and probably more.
Fee for the course is $ 40.00. Participants are encouraged to have a notebook for keeping notes for future reference.
Your coach will be Jim Zeek, life-long gardener since the days of Victory Gardens and organic farmer (certified since 1990). He has provided consultation with many of the Organic farms in El Dorado County and elsewhere, led seminars for primary and secondary public school teachers many of whom have responsibility for school gardens. In addition, Jim served on the Standards Committee of one of the largest and oldest organic certification agencies in the U. S. for 14 years.
All sessions will be at Goodness Orchard .4341 Pony Express Trail, Camino, CA.
